XV

Donovan Johnson-known as XV-holds a soft spot in my heart. Why you ask? Well we’re both from Wichita, KS. But my affinity for him does not end there. XV began creating music at 15 (XV=15 in Roman numerals, guys) and was signed to Warner Bros Records at the age of 25. His album has yet to drop but he, like fellow Midlist artist Outasight, has been featured on a commercial (Verizon, to be exact). Yes that is him, feeling “Awesome.”

His earlier work was rather derivative-sounding a lot like Lupe Fiasco. Yet he is truly differentiating himself in 2011 and undoubtedly into 2012. He has dropped a couple mixtapes including one this year, and so far his songs “Awesome,” “The 27 Club,” and “Chaka Shao Khan” have made a considerable impact.  His album “The Kid With the Green Backpack” drops in 2012. XV is an extraordinary lyricist. His music is honest and interesting.

Welcome to The Midlist, XV.

About

http://themidlist.wordpress.com

Emerging Artists.

Emerging Music.

The Midlist

“The midlist is a term in the publishing industry which refers to books which are not bestsellers but are strong enough to economically justify their publication.”

The Midlist, however, is not a website about books (our apologies to all you bibliophiles). Rather, The Midlist is dedicated to those artists who fall into that unique gray area in the music industry – the space between mainstream success and independent anonymity. These are the artists signed to a major label that haven’t yet sniffed a top 40 radio station’s rotation. These are the unknown, still developing musical icons of tomorrow. These are not the Taylor Swift’s or Dr. Dre’s of the world (unless they have a single flying under the radio) and these are also not the Immortal Technique’s or Atmosphere’s of the world (unless they’ve decided to embrace the qualities necessary for mainstream success).

So why should you care? While you may not have heard of these artists, some of the most respected executives in the music industry have – and thought enough of them to throw a cool million their way. And with millions in marketing and production costs going towards their undiscovered first single, the fact of the matter is that these unknown artists will be tomorrow’s hit-makers. The past predicts the future. Before “Tik Tok,” Ke$ha was just a midlist artist with a hook on Flo Rida’s “Right Round.” Before “Work Out,” J Cole was just a midlist artist opening for Jay-Z’s comeback tour.

So if you want to hear good music, or just want to be that guy who predicts every hit, you are in the right place. We’ll be keeping tabs on all the midlists artists who are poised to eventually breakthrough. We hope you come along for the ride.

Welcome to The Midlist
